Want to celebrate Halloween in NYC without dressing in costume or paying cover for a crowded bar? The ues. is a perfect pick.
Think spooky meets swanky. First of all, ues. is a speakeasy. What better way to grab a Halloween cocktail than at a place where you have to know a secret password, then find a secret door-open switch to get inside?
On the surface, ues. is an ice cream parlor. But don’t let this funky wall of ice cream pints fool you- it’s actually a door. Let someone behind the counter know you’re here to grab a drink and he'll casually respond by asking you to ‘find the switch.’ Feel your way along the walls and door until you find it. Flicker the switch, and in moments that door will open, and someone else will be waiting to lead you through a dark coat room, behind a thick black curtain, and into a fantastically spooky secret bar.
The drink menu is out of this world, with every thoughtful cocktail named with a nod to the neighborhood, plus a rating for strength, complexity, and wow! factor to help you decide. I tried the Second Avenue Subway- Marashino Liqueur, Solerno blood orange, meyers lemon, fresh mandarin, PopCrush sparkling wine, and a tiny scoop of SoCo Creamery Lemon sorbet.
Every Sunday night in October, ues. features a different Halloween classic movie, played on a massive projector in the back of the bar. It’s a 2-drink minimum for entry, and the bartenders pass out freshly-popped popcorn you can munch while you enjoy. The place is dark- lit only by candlelight- and they burn incense, giving off that characteristic, old-time sultry speakeasy vibe. According to their staff, these movie nights were so popular, they’re already brainstorming a holiday movie line up for December.
