west village date night

west village date night

The temperatures have been dropping below 45 in NYC lately.

Sidewalk seating and rooftop happy hour season has officially come to an end, and it’s time to circle back to our cozy, cold weather date night favorites. This week’s recommendation- Cuba.

Cuba has been my favorite dinner date spot for a few years now- and I only say that to score some ‘I liked it before it was cool’ points, because based on the small crowds of people lingering along Thompson Street hoping to score a last-minute table, this place appears to be the new cool-spot.

First of all, the ambiance is absolutely on point. Step inside at around 9 pm and you’re greeted with the warmth of Old Havana. A bolero bands sits atop a small stage playing incredible live music that radiates throughout the joint’s 2 floors (they have a basement level that’s great for groups- think birthdays or a high energy girl’s night). A man sits at an old wooden desk upstairs hand rolling Cuban cigars (bring cash if you want to grab one to share with your date on a chilly walk home).

Their cocktails are as authentic as they are delicious- they’ve actually won some awards for their mojito and sangria. Split a pitcher of the white sangria with your date- it’s a little pricey but you will not regret it, and at the first sip you’ll understand exactly why this magic elixir is award-winning.

As far as the menu, we’ve tried plenty of different options and never once been disappointed. The Vaca Frita is my go-to (pan fried skirt steak with garlic mojo, onions, parsley, lime, rice and beans). It always amazes me how the chef manages to make something as simple as a side of black beans taste somehow out-of-this-world. The portions are gigantic so bring your appetite or expect to head home with some leftovers. If you’re super hungry or just looking to taste a bunch of new things, split the tostones rellenos appetizer with your date. They’re like little savory plantain cups filled with a spicy shrimp sauce- absolutely divine and not the sort of item you’ll be able to grab at your everyday spot.
